August 21, 2024 – PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ

PNC Bank Arts Center welcomed British rock band Bush back for their “Loaded: The Greatest Hits” Tour, celebrating their 30th anniversary. It was a cool summer night but it didn’t take long for the night to heat up.

The night kicked off with Bones UK, the Grammy nominated rock band form Camden Town, London. The band consists of lead vocalist/guitarist Rosie Bones, Carmen Vandenberg on guitars, and drummer Heavy. Their set was filled with heavy rock riffs and rough-edged electronics. You could feel their edgy confidence throughout the venue and you immediately got hooked.

Seattle based rock band Candlebox soared onto the stage and the fans went wild. Kevin Martin, the band’s lead vocalist and the only original member still with the group, was pumped with energy from the moment he stepped on stage. His voice, a unique blend of power and vulnerability, was as compelling as ever, capturing the raw emotion that has always been at the core of Candlebox’s music. His stage presence was high energy and he engaged with the fans nonstop throughout the entire show, throwing guitar pics, shaking hands and signing drum sticks. Being a long-time fan of the band, this concert was particularly special, a poignant reminder of why Candlebox has held a cherished place in the hearts of so many over the past three decades.

Throughout the set, the band delivered a well-curated mix of their greatest hits and fan favorites. Songs like “Far Behind” and “You” brought the crowd to life, with many singing along to every word. These tracks, which were massive hits in the early ’90s, still resonate deeply with fans, and hearing them live was a powerful experience and filled the venue with a mix of melancholy and nostalgia.

Next up was Jerry Cantrell. An unforgettable experience for fans of the legendary guitarist and Alice in Chains co-founder. As someone who has followed Cantrell’s career for years, this concert was a dream come true. It was a night filled with raw emotion, masterful guitar work, and a setlist that perfectly encapsulated his incredible career.

From the moment Cantrell took the stage, the atmosphere was electric. The crowd erupted as he launched into the first notes of “Psychotic Break”. The Setlist was a well- balanced mix of his solo work and classic Alice In Chains staples like “Them Bones,”, “Got Me Wrong”, “Would?” and the iconic “Rooster”. His guitar work was as precise and emotive as ever, with every note resonating through the venue. The tone of his guitar, paired with his hauntingly melodic voice, created an ambiance that was both intense and deeply moving.

The night began with an energy that only built as the show progressed. Gavin Rossdale, the band’s charismatic frontman, was in top form, commanding the stage with his raw vocal power and dynamic presence. Rossdale’s energy was contagious, and it was clear that both he and the band were genuinely enjoying themselves, which only added to the concert’s vibrant atmosphere.

One of the most memorable moments of the night was when Rossdale ventured into the crowd during “Little Things,” a move that sent the audience into a frenzy. His willingness to engage directly with fans highlighted the band’s commitment to making each concert a unique experience. One thing you can say for certain is that Rossdale does not stop moving and gives his all at every show.

Chris Traynor on guitar, Corey Britz on bass, and Nik Hughes on drums provided a solid backbone, driving the performance forward with a tight, cohesive sound. The lighting and stage production were also top-notch, enhancing the mood of each song and adding a visual punch to the performance. A the start of “Swallowed” the lighting significantly changed, showcasing only Gavin as he stood alone in the center of the stage giving us all a very raw solo performance of this beautiful song.

The band has managed to stay relevant by continuously producing music that resonates with both old and new fans alike. Bush still has the motivation to put out music with the same power and integrity that they did in 1994. those who have followed Bush since the ’90s, the concert was a thrilling trip down memory lane. For newer fans, it was a chance to experience the raw energy and passion that has kept Bush at the forefront of rock music for so many years.

February 17, 2023 – Ocean Casino Resort, Atlantic City NJ

Bush & Candlebox ascended upon New Jersey’s version of “Sin City” Friday night as two of the most 90’s iconic bands played to a packed house at the Ocean Casino Resort. I have seen and reviewed Bush a few times before but this particular show was different. As a young professional living in Hoboken, NJ in the 1990’s I had easy access to live music there in town, and easily across the river in the Big Apple.  The post grunge and hard rock scene was exploding and one can hear both Bush and Candlebox being played in any bar you entered. They dominated the music scene.  As two of my favorite bands of that time, and to this day, I was excited to see them and more excited to get started on this review.

It was my first time seeing a show at this venue. The aptly named Ovation Hall was a cool space with not a bad seat in the house.  The stage was a perfect size. Not too big where you lose the band members and not too small or too tight.  It was perfect for capturing some good photos of a full band shot or some good, individual close-ups. Most importantly the acoustics were on point!

Both bands seemed to have taken a few sips from the fountain of youth as their vocal range and individual, non-mistakable, specific sounds were the same as if I were listening to them 30 years ago!

Candlebox, hailing from Seattle, Washington burst on the scene in 1990. They released seven studio albums, with several charting singles. The band found immediate success with the release of their self-titled debut album in July 1993 and rose to fame quickly through the year 2000. Opening for Bush on this tour, Candlebox sounded amazing and it soon became obvious to me that people came out to see them as well, as the seats filled in quickly and people were singing along with every word (including yours truly). Candlebox released their latest album in 2021 entitled Wolves. Kevin Martin is an excellent frontman.  His voice is still strong and melodic and sounded as good as ever. They played songs from their latest album but also mixed in many fan favorites like “Far Behind” & “You”, to which the crowd reacted with excitement and fist pumping, hand raising enjoyment.  They are the perfect complement to Bush and an awesome pairing for any music fan wanting to hear some amazing rock & roll or experience some iconic nostalgia from the 90’s. Candlebox is: Kevin Martin (lead vocals), Brian Quinn (guitar), Island Styles (guitar), Adam Kury (bass) & BJ Kerwin (drums).

Once the Candlebox set concluded one can sense the anticipation in the room as music fans awaited Bush. Crowds filled in a little more, people remained standing,  and it seemed difficult for ushers to keep people organized in their isles and ticketed seats. The floor became almost open access as fans pushed close to the stage.  Eventually the fans won, ushers gave up, and it became what felt like a private party with Bush as the amazing talent.

Pioneering the grunge-rock scene, Bush formed in 1992 in the UK and burst on the scene across the pond here in the US in 1993.  Frontman Gavin Rossdale has one of the most identifiable voices in the business and as mentioned before, sounded as he did 30 years ago.  Experiencing a massive career resurgence, Bush is on tour celebrating their latest album, The Art of Survival and its lead single, “More than Machines“hit the #1 spot on the Active Rock Chart and the 7th Bush single to receive such accolades.  The hard working band remains hungry as ever and it’s apparent in the lyrics of “More than Machines”.  Wisefully current, the song has resonated with a new generation of fans, with lyrics resembling a battle cry against a tech-dominated society, capitalistic greed, and the destruction of the environment and human connection as a whole.

Gavin said in an interview about the new album The Art of Survival, “…this is about the success stories of humanity’s survival against the odds. People just find a way to push through. We’ve all obviously suffered to varying degrees. I think the nature of life is the art of survival. Everyone is being tested all the time, but we find a way. In recent memory, we’ve made major strides and shown great resilience in the face of war, endless instances of racism, gender politics, a pandemic, and a melting pot of what we’ve experienced. For me, The Art of Survival encompasses all of this.”

The lights dimmed and Bush came on stage to the eagerly waiting crowd as they erupted in screams and applause. The stage was set with their red album cover backdrop, fog and strobe lights to start. In addition to his vocals, Gavin continues to pour all he has into his performance.  His voice maintains the raspy strength and unique sound it’s always had. The band played the new album which is one you can listen to from beginning to end as each song is amazing, while mixing in the fan favorites of old for which they are famous. Gavin uses the stage well and likes to engage with the audience as he always has. Half way through the performance, he left the stage and entered the audience, walking up and down the isles of the venue while singing along the way.  He kept security quite busy as they cleared the path like Moses splitting the Red Sea so Gavin can keep moving through. Stopping for an occasional picture or a quick dance with an audience member, the crowd eats it up in enjoyment through the up-close and more personal experience he provides. I’ve witnessed him do this before and know he does this often but I must say, this show was different. When I saw him last he was co-headlining on a multi-band bill. As the sole headliner, he delivers a heart pounding performance, full of energy and a willingness to please his fans, coming out for encore’s and delivering gold while reminding us all to LEARN FROM THE PAST – LIVE IN THE PRESENT & LOOK TO THE FUTURE!

October 7, 2022 – PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ

It was a beautiful fall evening in New Jersey as Alice In Chains, Breaking Benjamin, Bush & Plush closed out the summer schedule with the second to last performance at the PNC Bank Arts Center.

The talented all female band, Plush, opened the night with some great rock & roll. I’ve read that their mission is to bring rock back to the forefront of the music scene. The heavy guitar playing lady rockers are certainly driving that train in the right direction. They played for about half an hour and were a perfect opener to get the crowd amped up as rock fans filled the venue.

The 90’s alternative grunge rock band favorite Bush followed, and by the time Gavin Rossdale and team played their second song the Arts Center was packed and the amphitheater stayed that way for the entire night.  Bush sounded great, played for about 45 minutes and mixed in a bunch of old and new.  A few highlights for me were when Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains joined Bush for “Comedown” and another was when Gavin left the stage and paraded through the entire venue, from the orchestra all the way up to the deepest of lawn seats, singing the entire time and occasionally stopping for a hug, a hi-five and even a photo or two.


New Jersey born and Pennsylvania raised Benjamin Burnley IV of Breaking Benjamin followed. I have never seen them before but was familiar with their music and enjoyed their performance. Lead singer and guitar player Benjamin Burnley sounded great and belted some amazing rock and roll, mixed with the modern heavy metal screams to complete their unique sound. Many know that Burnley has a recurring illness (Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome), which is an acute brain disorder resulting from a lack of thiamine. This essential vitamin changes sugar into energy. When you have too little thiamine, your brain doesn’t have enough energy to work properly. The most common cause of thiamine deficiency is chronic alcohol use which in his case, almost ended his career. Burnley plays in the dark or without spot light or bright flashing lights in front of him due to the sensitivity of how his illness affects him. None-the-less, he doesn’t perform like he has a lack of anything and certainly not energy.  Burnley played for an hour, spoke to the audience often and seemed grateful to be in front of his adoring fans, all of whom he defines as his home crowd.  The band is comprised of Benjamin Burnley (lead vocals & rhythm guitar), Jasen Rauch (lead guitar & electronic strings), Keith Wallen (rhythm guitar & backing vocals), Aaron Bruch (bass & backing vocals), and Shaun Foist (drums & electronic percussion).  They completely rocked the house and were a perfect tee-up for Alice In Chains.

Alice In Chains (AIC) then finally came to stage to finish out the night and were AWESOME! I’ve been a big Alice In Chains fan but unfortunately have never had the opportunity to see the original front man and co-founder of the band Layne Staley perform before his passing. To this day he lives on as any alternative rock station will play AIC with Layne’s vocals. However, I must say the band has come together wonderfully and filled a tough seat in Layne Staley with new front man William DuVall.  Since 2006, DuVall has fronted Alice In Chains, sharing vocals and guitar with co-founding member Jerry Cantrell on three albums following the death of Layne Staley in 2002.  Original AIC band member and co-founder Jerry Cantrell said about DuVall when hiring him that he already knew DuVall and told him to just be himself rather than emulating Staley. Jerry highlighted that Alice In Chains was always better with two vocals supporting each other, so they worked well with DuVall and it was apparent. Not only do they sound similar but DuVall also brings a new look and feel while still maintaining the bands hard alternative rock image. I loved the show and the performance as they played throughout the night.  Gavin Rossdale of Bush returned the favor and joined AIC on stage for “Man in the Box” as the show wound down to its conclusion.

It was a great lineup and a perfect way to cap off a great summer of music at the PNC Bank Arts Center!  I’m already looking forward to next season!

August 5, 2016 – The Stone Pony, Asbury Park NJ

Music has always been a release for Rossdale, which is quite evident as one watches him live on stage. One of the most underrated frontman in rock, Bush lead vocalist Gavin Rossdale has consistently delivered a real rock show since first taking the stage in 1992. A career that has sold close to 20 million records in the US and Canada alone.

Vocalist & guitarist Rossdale came out on stage with high energy and got right into “Everything Zen”. Rossdale is quite captivating and bounces around the stage melting his fans hearts with his boyish smile and british accent as he engages with the audience.

The 17-song set included their big hits, “The Chemicals Between Us”, “Swallowed” and “Little Things”. The Encore included “Machinehead” from their 1994 release, ‘A Sixteen Stone’ followed by “Glycerin” & “Comedown”, before ending with R.E.M.’s “The One I Love”.

Their current lineup consists of Gavin Rossdale (lead vocals/Guitars), Chris Traynor (Guitar) & Corey Britz (Bass).
