Tool Unleashes Sonic Mastery at PPL Center, Allentown PA

It was well worth the two-hour drive from Central Jersey to Allentown, PA to experience the four-time Grammy Award winning Tool.  Tool has been a band I have wanted to see and review for a long time, much due to the mystery and experience of their shows vs. just being a fan of their music, as a Tool show is never the same twice.

I use the word “experience” & “show” frequently in this review as that is exactly what it was for me and the thousands of fans present this evening. While musically different, the fans are thrown into a masterpiece similar to a Pink Floyd “show”, a Dead “show”, or any “experience” that captivates and mesmerizes you visually and auditorily.

One of the first things you notice (and if you know – you know) there are signs all over and taped to the back of seats informing fans; “NO PHOTOS, NO VIDEOS, NO AUDIO RECORDINGS”. In a world of everyone carrying their own personal video recording devices (aka: their cell phones) as well as social media, I wasn’t sure how the audience would behave to this poignant and very well and strongly enforced request. While there were some rule breakers who were immediately targeted with laser beams and flash lights from security and some even escorted out, those who did follow the rules discovered that the full attention you give to Tools music mastery and visually stimulating set allows yourself to be fully submerged into a sonic odyssey without distraction. The mesmerizing visuals, a mélange of surrealistic, alien like animations, complemented the ethereal yet powerful vocals of Maynard James Keenan as his haunting presence and hypnotic voice weaved through the venue, commanding attention and reverence.

The band’s instrumental prowess was on full display, with Adam Jones’ deft guitar work conjuring otherworldly melodies, accompanied by the rhythmic thunder of Justin Chancellor’s bass and the precise drumming of Danny Carey. Each note, each beat, resonated through the arena, and thundered through my chest, creating an immersive experience that transcended mere music.

Due to the group’s efforts to combine musical experimentation through very long and complex releases as well as through the incorporation of visual arts, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today’s music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship and the band’s insistence on privacy.

That desire for privacy is noticeable in their live shows as Tool incorporates an unorthodox stage setting and video display. Keenan and Carey line up in the back on elevated platforms, while Jones and Chancellor stand in the front, toward the sides of the stage. Keenan often faces the backdrop or the sides of the stage rather than the audience and I found this to not only be a strategy for him to stay in his head while he performs, but I like to also think it’s a nod to the rest of the band, to have them maintain the spotlight.  It lends to the mystery and what the band expects from their fans and how they want the fans to experience their show.

The band employs an amazing laser light experience and extensive backlighting to direct the focus away from the band members and toward other areas of the arena and to the large screens in the back. The purposeful dark spaces on stage are mostly for Maynard. A lot of the songs are a personal journey for him and I’ve learned he has a hard time with the glare of the lights when he’s trying to reproduce these emotions for the audience. He needs a bit of personal space, and he feels more comfortable in the shadows.

Described as, “the thinking person’s metal band” Tool encompases the full spectrum. Cerebral and visceral, soft and heavy, melodic and abrasive, tender and brutal, familiar and strange, western and eastern, beautiful and ugly, taut yet sprawling and epic, they are a tangle of perfect contradictions. The band puts an emphasis on the sound of their songs and attempts to reduce the effect lyrics can have on the perception of songs which is substantiated by not always releasing song lyrics with their albums.

In an October 2023 interview, bassist Justin Chancellor stated that the band has “many ideas cooking” for their new album, and mentioned tentative plans to enter the studio in 2024 and I can’t wait to see what comes next, as well as to “experience” another Tool “show”!

Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990, the group’s line-up includes vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey. Justin Chancellor has been the band’s bassist since 1995!

As the final notes echoed into the night, the crowd, awestruck and fulfilled, erupted in a thunderous ovation. Tool had not just performed; they had crafted an otherworldly journey, an experience that lingered long after the last chord had faded.

James Taylor’s concert at the PNC Bank Arts Center was nothing short of a musical masterpiece. Taylor, a legendary figure in the folk and rock genres, proved that his enduring talent continues to captivate audiences across generations.

From the moment he stepped on stage, the audience was transported to a realm of timeless melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Taylor’s signature smooth voice, combined with his exceptional guitar skills, created an intimate and magical atmosphere. It was like having a conversation with an old friend who shared stories through his songs.

The setlist was a perfect blend of his classic hits, demonstrating his artistic evolution while paying homage to his roots. “Fire and Rain,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and “Carolina in My Mind” were met with thunderous applause, and Taylor’s emotive rendition of each song left not a dry eye in the house.

The backing band was outstanding, adding depth and richness to the performance without overshadowing Taylor’s presence. The stage design, with its warm lighting and subtle visuals, complemented the music beautifully.

Lionel Richie // Earth, Wind & Fire

Concert Reviews

Review by Chris Yates // Photography by Estelle Massry

Ladies and gentlemen, music enthusiasts of all ages, concert icons unite at Wells Fargo Center as two legendary bands take us on a magical journey through the realms of rhythm and soul, brought to us by none other than Earth, Wind & Fire and Lionel Richie. As the vibrant lights danced across the stage, and the crowd’s anticipation reached its peak, these legendary artists took us on a timeless musical adventure that transcended generations.  Their awards and accolades as you’ll read below substantiates the level of talent being experienced on this night.

Opening the evening was the American musical group Earth, Wind & Fire (EWF). The band was formed in Chicago in 1969 and is still powered by prominent original members Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson. Their style and sound span over various music genres such as jazz, R&B, soul, funk, disco, pop, and Latin. They are among the best-selling music artists of all time, with sales of over 90 million records worldwide. Accolades include: 6 Grammys out of 17 nominations and four American Music Awards out of 12 nominations. They have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the NAACP Image Award Hall of Fame, and Hollywood’s Rockwalk, and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band has received an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award, a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, a Soul Train Legend Award, a NARAS Signature Governor’s Award, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2012 Congressional Horizon Award, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2019. Rolling Stone has called them “innovative, precise yet sensual, calculated yet galvanizing” and declared that the band “changed the sound of black pop”. VH1 has described EWF as “one of the greatest bands” of all time.

Earth, Wind & Fire graced the stage on this evening with their unmistakable fusion of funk, soul, and R&B. The stage was set with elevated drums and percussion sections, an elevated keyboard set-up while the horn section and dynamic front-men spread out center stage. From the moment they launched into their set, the audience was transported to a place where every worry melted away, and all that mattered was the irresistible groove of the music. Their harmonious vocals, backed by a tight-knit band, created a sonic tapestry that was impossible not to move to. I was captivated by their choreography and how each song had different moves where every band member, no matter the instrument they were playing, were in sync and moved in perfect harmony. As I looked around soaking in the atmosphere, everyone in the packed venue were on their feet dancing with one another. We were transported to an environment of one massive, fun party! Classics like “September”, “Let’s Groove” and “Shining Star” had the entire arena on its feet, singing along with sheer joy. The horn section was electrifying, punctuating the melodies with bursts of energy that reverberated through the venue.  I was surprised of how many songs I knew, pretty much singing every lyric to every song that played as they ran through hit after hit!  It was truly an amazing show. I loved it!

EWF did more than get the crowd excited and in the dance and party mood for Lionel Richie, and what was about to be a captivating performance. Lionel, an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and television personality rose to fame in the 1970s as a songwriter and the co-lead singer of the Motown group Commodores; writing and recording the hit singles “Easy“, “Sail On“, “Three Times a Lady” and “Still“, with the group before his departure. In 1980, he wrote and produced the US Billboard Hot 100 number one single “Lady” for Kenny Rogers. In 1981, Richie wrote and produced the single “Endless Love“, which he recorded as a duet with Diana Ross; it remains among the top 20 bestselling singles of all time, and the biggest career hit for both artists. In 1982, he officially launched his solo career with the album Lionel Richie, which sold over four million copies and spawned the singles “You Are“, “My Love“, and the number one single “Truly“.

During his solo career, Lionel Richie became one of the most successful balladeers of the 1980s, and has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time. He has won four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for “We Are the World“, and Album of the Year for “Can’t Slow Down“. “Endless Love” was nominated for an Academy Award; while “Say You, Say Me” won both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe award for Best Original Song. In 2016, Lionel Richie received the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s highest honor, the Johnny Mercer Award. In 2022, he received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by the Library of Congress; as well as the American Music Awards Icon Award. He was also inducted into Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

Lionel’s performance started with showing images on a large digital video backdrop of his life, how he started his career, all his awards (as noted above) almost taking us through a timeline of his rising to fame. While everyone’s attention was on the video screen towards the back of the stage, a spotlight hit the end of the stage runway towards the middle of the arena, Lionel rose from below the platform dressed in black but with a white coat tail tuxedo jacket and opened with “Hello” greeting the crowd as they erupted in cheers, a testament to his enduring influence and timeless appeal

Richie’s smooth, velvety voice wrapped around the audience like a warm embrace, as he delivered hit after hit throughout the evening. From the heart-wrenching ballad “Hello” to the infectious optimism of “All Night Long,” his performance was a masterclass in charisma and musical artistry. The chemistry between Richie and his band was palpable, and his interactions with the crowd created an intimate connection that made the massive arena feel like an intimate gathering of friends. Lionel recognized with appreciation the diverse age group he has as fans.  With his renewed popularity from American Idol, he now not only is recognized by fans in their 50’s and 60’s but also adoring fans who are 10, to 20 years old! One could tell how thankful and appreciative he is, recognizing how fortunate he’s been to have such a wide range of fans of all ages. He sang wonderfully moving about the stage and runway as well as at his grand white piano, and the images displayed throughout the show were beautiful and colorful and seemed to blend to each song he sang.  It was amazing to experience him sing and perform, I knew each song and sang to it as did everyone else in the arena. I loved every minute of the show.

Throughout the night, both Earth, Wind & Fire and Lionel Richie seamlessly blended their classic hits with a modern touch, reminding us that great music transcends eras. The stage production was a visual spectacle, with stunning visuals and effects that enhanced the immersive experience. Each song felt like a journey, a testament to the lasting impact of these iconic artists on the music world. As the final notes reverberated through the Wells Fargo Center, there was a collective sense of fulfillment in the air. Earth, Wind & Fire and Lionel Richie had not only entertained us but had also transported us to a place of unity, joy, and nostalgia. It was a night to remember, a celebration of music’s power to unite and uplift. If you ever have the opportunity to witness these legends in concert, do not miss it – for they are a testament to the enduring magic of live music.

Fall Out Boy

Concert Reviews

Review & Photography by Estelle Massry

The atmosphere at the PNC venue was charged with excitement as fans eagerly awaited the highly anticipated Fall Out Boy concert on August 5, 2023. The evening promised a blend of nostalgia and modern flair, with the band known for their dynamic stage presence and catalog of hit songs.

Opening up for their “So Much for (Tour) Dust” tour were some pretty cool bands. Games We Play were so energetic and moved quickly across the stage jumping in the air and getting the crowd excited for what was to come. Royal & The Serpent followed and brought a completely different vibe almost putting us into a trance.

The anticipation among the fans was palpable as they waited for Bring Me The Horizon to take the stage. Considered one of UK’s biggest rock band and by seeing the fans I would say the same goes for the US as well. When the first chords of “AmEN!” reverberated through the venue, the crowd erupted into a frenzy of cheers and screams. The energy of frontman Oli Sykes commanded the stage with an unmatched presence.

As the lights dimmed and the crowd erupted in cheers, Fall Out Boy literally kicked off with a bang. They did not waste time with the loud explosions of fireworks that made us all jump from the very start as well as flames flaring across the stage. It really set the tone for the rest of the night. From the first chord to the last note, the band delivered an unforgettable performance that showcased their musical prowess and deep connection with their audience.

Lead vocalist Patrick Stump’s vocals were as captivating as ever, effortlessly transitioning from powerful anthems to more intimate ballads. The energy emanating from bassist Pete Wentz was infectious, as he moved around the stage with undeniable charisma, engaging the crowd at every turn. Guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley formed a tight musical backbone, driving the rhythm and melodies that had the entire venue dancing and singing along.

The setlist for the evening was a carefully curated journey through Fall Out Boy’s discography. Hits like “Sugar, We’re Goin Down,” “Uma Thurman,” and “Centuries” evoked a sense of nostalgia in long-time fans, while newer tracks from their recent albums demonstrated the band’s evolution and ability to remain relevant in the ever-changing music landscape.

The production value of the concert was nothing short of spectacular. A visually stunning stage setup, complete with extreme pyrotechnical elements, complemented the band’s performance, enhancing the overall experience and heightened the excitement, creating a sensory feast for the audience.

The band’s ability to connect with their audience through their music and energetic performance was undeniable. With a setlist that balanced their iconic classics with newer hits, and a stage production that brought their music to life visually, the concert showcased why Fall Out Boy continues to be a beloved and influential force in the music industry.

Incubus // Badflower // Paris Jackson

Concert Reviews

Review by Chris Yates // Photography by Estelle Massry

The famed Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey, came alive this summer on August 8th as it hosted an electrifying lineup featuring the renowned rock band Incubus, the edgy alternative group Badflower, and the emerging artist Paris Jackson.

It was a beautiful, refreshingly windy summer night at the Jersey Shore. The atmosphere was charged with stoked anticipation as fans gathered to witness this diverse musical experience. The Stone Pony Summer Stage, known for its intimate setting and historical significance in the rock music scene, set the perfect backdrop for a beautiful evening of performances.

Kicking off the evening was Paris Jackson, the second child and only daughter of the legendary Michael Jackson, who has been carving her own path in the music world. Jackson is an American model, actress, and singer. In 2020, Jackson signed a deal with Republic Records. Her first single, “Let Down”, was released on October 29, 2020. Her unique blend of indie rock and folk influences resonated well with the crowd. Jackson’s ethereal vocals and emotionally charged lyrics captured the audience’s attention, showcasing her potential as a promising artist. Her setlist, which included tracks from her debut album, created a captivating and introspective atmosphere.

As Paris concluded and the sun began to set, the stage was taken over by Badflower, known for their raw and honest lyrics combined with powerful instrumentals. Badflower is an American rock band founded in Los Angeles, California. The band is composed of singer/guitarist Josh Katz, lead guitarist Joey Morrow, bass guitarist Alex Espiritu and drummer Anthony Sonetti. The band is signed to Big Machine / John Varvatos Records and was named Artist of the Week by Apple Music  after the release of their EP Temper in 2016. Their debut studio album, “OK, I’m Sick”, was released on February 22, 2019. Their second album This Is How the World Ends was released on September 24, 2021. The band is currently working on a new album.

As Badflower hit the stage the crowd erupted in excitement as the band launched into their high-energy set. Their hit songs like “Ghost” and “Heroin” delivered a mix of introspection and rebellion that resonated deeply with the audience. Badflower’s frontman’s emotive vocals and the band’s tight performance created an electric connection with the crowd, leaving a lasting impact and the perfect set up for Incubus.

Headlining the evening was the iconic band Incubus, known for their genre-blending sound that fuses rock, alternative, and funk elements. Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Nicole Row (filling in for Ben Kenney on bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ LYFE. The band’s name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose “Incubus” almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word “sex” in it. “We were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it,” says the band. Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single “Drive” and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009 and they continue to pack venues with adoring dedicated fans which was on full display in Asbury Park, NJ on this night.

From the moment they stepped on stage, Incubus had the crowd in the palm of their hands. Their performance was a journey through their extensive catalogue, featuring both classic hits and newer material. The band’s frontman Brandon Boyd’s charismatic stage presence and powerful vocals were as captivating as ever. The crowd sang along passionately to favorites like “Drive,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “Anna Molly.” Incubus’s musicianship and tight-knit performance showcased their years of experience, leaving no doubt about their status as rock legends.

It was a beautiful evening blending the best of weather and music, and The Stone Pony Summer Stage provided an intimate and immersive experience, allowing fans to feel connected to the artists on stage. The combination of Incubus’s seasoned presence, Badflower’s edgy intensity, and Paris Jackson’s emerging talent created a diverse lineup that catered to a wide range of musical preferences who were all present for the entire show. The audience’s energy and enthusiasm added to the overall positive vibe of the evening, making it a memorable concert experience for everyone in attendance.

The Incubus, Badflower, and Paris Jackson concert at The Stone Pony Summer Stage was a fantastic blend of established rock legends and rising stars. The venue’s historical significance and the artists’ dynamic performances combined to create an unforgettable night of music, leaving fans fully sun soaked with audible satisfaction.

Alter Bridge // Sevendust // Mammoth

Concert Reviews

Review by Chris Yates // Photography by Estelle Massry

On a beautiful summer night at the Jersey Shore the Summer Stage at The Stone Pony was set ablaze by the powerful sounds of Mammoth, Sevendust, and Alter Bridge. The crowd was buzzing with anticipation as fans of all ages gathered to witness this epic lineup.

I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to see and review these bands a few times before (3 to be exact) and each time I experience them I’m not even close to being left for a loss of words.

Kicking off the night was Mammoth, and as reviewed before, a rising force in the rock scene celebrating their new album Mammoth II. Despite their relative newcomer status, the band showcased their undeniable talent, delivering a performance that demanded attention. Lead vocalist Wolfgang Van Halen roared with passion and delivered their guitar-driven anthems which resonated with the crowd, setting a high bar for the night ahead. After playing on this night, Mammoth were to appear on the Today Show the following morning and tested some new material as they practiced for their morning national television debut.

In addition to being added to this tour, Mammoth is also touring and opening for Metallica. The M72 tour, named after Metallica’s newly announced 72 Seasons album, finds the group playing two separate shows in each city without repeating any songs or opening acts. For most North American cities, Mammoth WVH will open the first show.

Sevendust continued the beautiful summer evening, a veteran band known for their distinctive blend of alternative metal and post-grunge were supporting and adding to their 2020 release Blood & Stone with their 14th studio record titled Truth Killer. The announcement came with the release of their latest single “Fence,” set for release on July 28 and is their first release since joining Napalm Records.

As soon as the band hit the stage, the energy level skyrocketed. Loyal Sevendust fans screamed with excitement as the band unleashed a relentless barrage of hits. Lead vocalist Lajon Witherspoon’s vocals were nothing short of impressive, effortlessly shifting from soaring melodies to guttural screams. The band’s tight chemistry was evident, and they interacted effortlessly with the crowd, creating an intense sense of unity and connection. I’m a big fan of Sevendust and how they carved a niche for themselves in a crowded space of heavy rock by providing heavy hitting rock & roll but with soft or smooth edges. Definitely a unique sound and presence with a delivery that just about defines a new genre of music.

As the night rolled on, anticipation reached a fever pitch for, Alter Bridge. The stage was set with a striking backdrop, and great lighting as the sun set on Asbury Park, NJ. The crowd’s anticipation was palpable. From the moment they took the stage, Alter Bridge displayed why they are considered one of the modern giants of rock music.

Lead singer Myles Kennedy’s voice was nothing short of awe-inspiring. With his incredible vocal range and emotional delivery, he effortlessly navigated through their expansive catalog of hits. Guitar virtuoso Mark Tremonti shredded through riffs with precision, leaving fans in awe of his technical prowess. Bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips laid down a rock-solid foundation, driving the rhythm with power and precision.

While it’s summertime at the beach in NJ, don’t tell that to Mark Tremonti. The Alter Bridge and Creed guitarist has announced his first-ever holiday album, titled Christmas Classics New & Old. The new release sees Tremonti singing and performing nine holiday classics and one original song. For the LP, Tremonti teamed up with the same orchestra that played on his recent Frank Sinatra covers album Christmas Classics New & Old arrives October 27th.

As for some of the holiday classics, Tremonti puts his own spin on traditional songs such as “Jingle Bells,” “The First Noel,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “O Holy Night” and more. His original holiday song is called “Christmas Morning” and features piano and a marching band.

Highlights of the night included spine-tingling renditions of classics like “Blackbird,” “Metalingus,” and “Isolation.” The band also showcased songs from their latest album,  captivating the audience with their newest creations.

The light show and stage production were also on point, complementing the music with stunning visual effects that added to the overall experience. The synergy between the band members and their passion for their craft were evident throughout the performance, creating an electric atmosphere that left a lasting impression on everyone present.

The Mammoth, Sevendust, and Alter Bridge concert was an unforgettable night of rock music at its finest. Each band brought their A-game, and the result was an explosive display of talent and passion. From the cool riffs of Mammoth to the iconic anthems of Sevendust and the awe-inspiring performance of Alter Bridge, this show will undoubtedly be etched into the memory of every rock enthusiast fortunate enough to be in attendance. If you ever get the chance to witness these rock giants live, don’t miss it – you won’t be disappointed!

Staind & Godsmack

Concert Reviews

Review by Chris Yates // Photography by Estelle Massry

An Explosive Night of Rock and Emotion!

On a pulsating night filled with electric energy (literally… as micro bursts of heavy winds, thunder & lightening erupted just prior to the performance), two titans of the rock world, Staind and Godsmack, took the stage at the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ.  The concert was a riveting blend of hard-hitting rock anthems and heartfelt ballads, proving that both bands have not lost their touch in delivering an unforgettable live experience.

Opening the night was DJ “Mix Master Mike” of Beastie Boys fame who got the crowd jumping and energized for the show.

Then after a short delay due to weather and as the stage lights flickered, Staind with lead singer Aaron Lewis emerged, armed with his acoustic guitar, ready to deliver an emotionally charged set. Staind’s music has always been known for its introspective lyrics and haunting melodies, and tonight was no different. As he strummed his guitar and opened his mouth to sing, an aura of authenticity and vulnerability enveloped the venue, captivating us all. It was evident that Lewis was not just performing for us; he was sharing his soul with the audience.

His vocal range was nothing short of extraordinary, seamlessly shifting from tender, melodic verses to powerful and commanding choruses. Each note was executed with precision and finesse, while his expressive vibrato added a captivating touch to every lyric. It felt as if every word carried its own weight, and he skillfully conveyed the emotions behind each song, making them resonate deeply with the audience. I have always loved Stand’s music and Aaron’s voice but listening to him live absolutely blew me away. I had the chills throughout multiple songs!

Opening with the haunting ballad “Outside,” Aaron Lewis’ soulful vocals filled the venue and captured the hearts of every single person in attendance. The band moved seamlessly through their discography, playing crowd favorites like “It’s Been Awhile,” “So Far Away,” and “Epiphany.” The emotional intensity was palpable as fans sang along, connecting with the poignant themes of love, loss, and self-reflection present in Staind’s music.

The standout Staind moment of the night came during “Something to Remind You,” where Aaron Lewis left the crowd stunned with his raw and vulnerable performance. The atmosphere became electric, as if providing our own micro burst, as thousands of voices harmonized, creating a spine-tingling experience that will be etched in the memories of all those present.

After a brief intermission, the crowd eagerly awaited the arrival of Godsmack, the Boston-based powerhouse known for their intense performances and thunderous sound. The band is celebrating 25 years together!

As the lights dimmed, the crowd erupted in cheers as their curtain dropped and the unmistakable growl of lead singer Sully Erna echoed through the venue, pyrotechnics and all. They kicked off the show with their hit “Cryin’ Like a Bitch,” setting the tone for a night full of raw energy. Throughout their set, Godsmack unleashed a barrage of their biggest hits, including “Awake,” “Speak,” and “Voodoo.” The band’s chemistry on stage was undeniable, with guitarist Tony Rombola shredding away and bassist Robbie Merrill keeping the rhythm tight. The highlight of their performance was undoubtedly the drum battle between Sully Erna and drummer Shannon Larkin. The two engaged in a mind-blowing drum duel that left the audience speechless and cheering for more.

Winding down the evening, Sully sat at the piano as he played in support of one of their many charities, The Scars Foundation; which benefits mental health awareness, reminding us “that we are all imperfectly perfect”.

The Staind & Godsmack concert was an unforgettable night of rock and emotion. Both bands showcased their immense talent and ability to connect with their audience on a profound level. Godsmack’s heavy-hitting performance set the stage on fire, while Staind’s emotionally charged set struck a chord with every heart in the room. The combination of these two powerhouse bands made for a concert experience that will resonate with fans for years to come.

Boy George & Culture Club

Concert Reviews

Review by Chris Yates // Photography by Estelle Massry

A Timeless Explosion of Nostalgia and Artistry lit up the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on Wednesday night.

Opening for Boy George were Howard Jones and Berlin which were the perfect setup, getting the audience in the mood as we were all thrown back to the 1980’s.

Howard Jones, the British synth-pop legend known for his trailblazing music in the 1980s, transported the audience on a captivating journey through time with a blend of classic hits and modern adaptations.

Jones performed classics like “Things Can Only Get Better” and “Life in One Day” which resonated with the audience, evoking fond memories of their youth. Perhaps one of the most touching moments of the evening was when Jones performed “No One Is to Blame.” The audience swayed in unison, moved by the heartfelt lyrics and the enduring message of hope and forgiveness. But it wasn’t all about reliving the past. Jones demonstrated his artistic growth by introducing new arrangements and reimagined versions of some songs, showcasing his musical evolution without losing the essence of the originals.

Following Howard Jones was the iconic Terri Nunn, frontwoman of the legendary band Berlin. With a career spanning decades and a voice that still resonates powerfully, Terri delivered a captivating performance that reminded us all why she remains an enduring figure in the music industry. From the very first note, it was evident that Terri’s voice had lost none of its power or allure. Her voice soared effortlessly through the venue, hitting high notes with precision and resonating with raw emotion. Nunn’s ability to convey both vulnerability and strength within her vocal delivery was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Terri and the band curated a setlist that catered to both longtime fans and newcomers alike. Classics such as “Take My Breath Away” (of Top Gun fame) and “The Metro” elicited thunderous applause and sing-alongs from the crowd. Nunn also treated the audience to some newer material, demonstrating her continued creative evolution as an artist.

After Berlin, as the lights dimmed and the eager crowd settled into their seats, a wave of anticipation washed over the venue. The stage came alive with a burst of color and energy as Boy George and Culture Club gracefully made their entrance. It was a moment that transported the audience back to the iconic 1980s, a time when their music had captured the hearts of millions. This live performance was set to be a night of nostalgia and celebration of a band that continues to captivate audiences with their unique style and unmistakable talent.

The opening chords of “Next Thing Will Be Amazing” reverberated through the venue, instantly igniting the atmosphere. Boy George, the enigmatic front-man, looked as vibrant as ever with his signature flamboyant outfit, adorned with his iconic hat and makeup. His voice was in top form, and it was evident that time had done nothing to diminish his vocal prowess. The audience, a diverse mix of generations, sang along with fervor, proving that the songs of Boy George and Culture Club have truly transcended time.

Throughout the evening, the band delivered hit after hit, each song accompanied by incredible musicianship and contagious energy. From the groovy beats of “Karma Chameleon” to the heartfelt balladry of “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” the band had the crowd dancing, swaying, and emotionally engaged all at once. Beyond the undeniable chemistry between Boy George and Culture Club, the supporting musicians were outstanding, enhancing each song’s depth and adding their own flair to the performance. The saxophone was particularly impressive, adding a soulful touch to the band’s already eclectic sound.

Boy George’s magnetic presence on stage was captivating, as he effortlessly interacted with the audience, always with a smile, sharing stories and anecdotes between songs, speaking to the audience to “Let it Go” on this night, “relax, forget your troubles and enjoy the music that surrounds you”. His humor and wit had everyone laughing, creating an intimate atmosphere that made the audience feel like they were part of a special gathering rather than just spectators at a concert. He celebrated how long the band has been playing together and joked that “they didn’t break up for 4 years, they just didn’t talk each other”.

One of the standout moments of the night was their rendition of “Time (Clock of the Heart),” which left many in the audience teary-eyed and moved. Boy George’s emotional delivery and the band’s heartfelt performance struck a chord with fans, reinforcing the timeless quality of their music and its enduring emotional impact.  It was a special time to see a live show as tributes were made to the recent passing of Sinéad O’Connor, as well as Mick Jagger’s 80th (Yes 80!!) birthday, sighting that “the music will keep you young” as he went into a rendition of the Rolling Stones, “Sympathy for the Devil”.

As the concert reached its climax, the unmistakable intro of “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” had the entire venue on its feet, dancing and celebrating the night away. Boy George and Culture Club had created a time warp that brought the audience back to the ’80s, and yet the magic of their music felt just as fresh and relevant as it did decades ago.

Boy George and Culture Club proved once again why they remain an iconic force in the music industry. Their live performance was a testament to their artistry, showmanship, and ability to bridge generations through their timeless music. The night was a celebration of nostalgia, love, and the enduring impact of a band that continues to leave an indelible mark on the hearts of their fans.

Garbage // Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Concert Reviews

July 14, 2023 – The Mann Center, Philadelphia, PA

Review by Chris Yates // Photography by Estelle Massry

Music Den Live would like to personally thank Shirley Manson’s granny and Noel Gallagher’s granny for being sick of them enough to ship them off to America on tour together, just for our pleasure.

In an interview prior to their American tour, they were asked; How did you come to find yourselves touring together? Manson replied, “well, my granny knows Noel’s granny and everybody thought it would be a good idea if we toured America together.”  Gallagher followed by stating, “my granny said to Shirley’s granny, Look, I’ve had enough of him. And you’ve had enough of her, so let’s pack them off to America.”

And thankfully for us they love their granny’s enough to listen!

It was a hot and humid night in Philadelphia at the beautiful outdoor amphitheater, The Mann Center.  While hot, it seems the weather Gods blessed us as it rained just about everywhere on the east coast this evening except over Philadelphia.

Touted as one of the best Canadian bands of all time, Metric opened the evening for the co-headliners and put on a great show. It’s easy to see why they have such a strong following. This Toronto indie rock group, which is also appreciated in synth-pop circles, started in the late 1990s as the duo of Emily Haines and James Shaw. It has since grown into a foursome that continues to draw raves from a loyal fan base and music critics alike. Among the eight studio albums Metric has released, 2009’s Fantasies remains the gold standard. It won the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year, and the song Stadium Love has been incorporated into game-day experience by MLB’s Toronto Blue Jays and the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers over the years. Emily has strong stage presence and sang with a ton of energy. They were the perfect opener for Garbage who followed.

Garbage, led by Shirley Manson is one of the most influential female led rock, alternative rock and grunge bands of all time. While led by Scottish singer, Manson, Garbage is actually an American band formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. At the time, the grunge scene was dominated by male led bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and more, Garbage and Shirley (as female lead) stood out and recognized immediate commercial success. The bands debut album holding the same name was critically acclaimed upon its release. Selling over four million copies and going double platinum in the US, UK and Australia. It was accompanied by a string of successful singles including Stupid Girl and Only Happens When it Rains. Other than Manson, the band’s line-up consists of American musicians Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig and has remained unchanged since its inception. All four members are involved on the writing and production process.

Shirley and the band came on stage with tremendous confidence and comfortability which was welcomed with thunderous applause. Manson looked beautiful and very cool in what I would define as grunge chic, wearing a white long top which came below her knees, tights with a colorful pattern underneath, with patent leather boots donning red accented tips. Over her white top she wore a red tulle cover which accented the stylish outfit, accompanied by a black sash draped over her waistline. Her hair was slicked back tight and she wore cool eye makeup. It was a very stylish, almost high fashion outfit/look.  Shirley sang powerfully and moved about the stage giving on-lookers who were lucky enough to have close seats a personal experience. Her stage presence was not just powerful. The best way I can describe it is Badass! Garbage played in front of a screen that changed colors and images and the lighting was great! I loved how she struck poses of confidence and really soaked in the audiences appreciation. She played for about an hour and a half with a large set list which included many of the fans favorites. I enjoyed it very much!

Following Garbage was Noel and his High Flying Birds. I never had the chance to see and review Oasis but was a fan of their music and can remember singing many of their songs as I blasted them on my car stereo. Noel was the chief songwriter, lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist of the rock band Oasis until their split in 2009. After leaving Oasis, he formed Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. He is one of the most successful songwriters in British music history, as the writer of eight UK number-one singles and co-writer of a further number one, as well as the sole or primary writer of ten UK number-one studio albums. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential songwriters in the history of British rock music, cited by numerous major subsequent artists as an influence, so I was excited to experience his music live.

Noel is from Manchester, England and if you weren’t aware, is a HUGE, I mean HUGE fan of Manchester City Football Club (soccer for those on this side of the pond). This is made overly apparent by his stage/set design complete with life size cardboard cutouts of the Man City coach and some players as well as a Man City podium. The cutouts were accompanied by a bunch of flower arrangements and bouquets spread throughout.  It was an interesting set design to say the least.  Noel was accompanied on stage with quite a few other members. Not only musicians but a line of backup singers, percussion and synthesizer or techno/electric techs. The compilation worked as he sang in beautiful melodic tones while playing his guitar and positioned center stage. He played for another hour and half and to the delight of the audience, mixed in some Oasis songs towards the end of the set. Not too much movement about stage, but when your voice carries you as his does, not much movement is needed as that speaks for itself.  I enjoyed the show, as did many of the fans who support him all wearing their Man City jerseys if droves.

They concluded their tour in Boston after finishing Philadelphia, so while you won’t get the chance to see them on this tour after reading this review, I would recommend seeing all three bands live the next time you have the chance, whether together or individually.

Oh… and special thanks to Granny Gallagher & Granny Manson!

Counting Crows

Concert Reviews

July 6, 2023 – PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ

Review & Photography by Estelle Massry

The Grammy and Academy Award-nominated rock band Counting Crows have captivated us with their soulful tunes since their multi-platinum breakout album in 1993, “August and Everything After” selling more than 7 million copies in the United States.

The Counting Crows’ debut single, “Mr. Jones” was released 30 years ago. How ironic to make a song about how cool it would be to be famous only to have it come true and still valid after all this time.

Despite the blistering heat, the outdoor venue filled up quickly in anticipation of fans seeing their favorite band. Dashboard Confessional are joining Counting Crows on the “Banshee Season Tour” and what a great surprise it was to have Adam come out out to introduce them and say how happy he is to be on tour together as they are long-time friends and his favorite band.

The Counting Crows play with pure passion and stage presence. Every member of the band shows his love for their songs and for what they do. Adam Duritz’s intimate expressions as he delivers each song makes you feel connected. I feel that every one of us have our own personal stories that we go back to and reflect on as we hear these songs. The fans sure felt it and embraced it from the moment they stepped on stage until the very last note.

Formed in 1991, the band consists of Adam Duritz (vocalist), Charlie Gillingham (keyboards), David Immergluck (multi-instrumental), Dan Vickrey (guitar), David Bryson (guitar), Millard Powers (bass) and Jim Bogios (drums). The “Banshee Season Tour”kicked off on June 13th in Omaha, NE and will finish off at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO on September 25th.
